Although coffee can be seen as part of a healthy eating routine, consuming coffee and other caffeinated beverages is generally not recommended during an elimination diet. Instead, coffee alternative beverages suitable for elimination are preferred to allow the body to rest.
What is an Elimination Diet?
An elimination diet is a nutrition program carried out to observe immune responses by eliminating food groups that can lead to various reactions in the body, primarily in the digestive system. Generally, foods that may cause allergies or intolerances, such as dairy products, gluten, eggs, processed sugar, some fats, and spices, are removed from the diet. After a few weeks, these removed food groups are slowly reintroduced to the diet to identify which foods cause intolerance.
While various foods like dairy products, gluten, and processed sugars are generally completely removed from the diet in an elimination diet, it is also advised not to consume stimulating beverages like coffee during this period. The caffeine in coffee can affect the digestive system and increase the level of cortisol, known as the stress hormone, thereby masking the body's natural reactions. For this reason, herbal teas or herbal coffee alternatives with a more calming effect are recommended instead of coffee during an elimination diet.
